當?shù)貢r間11日（周二），世界衛(wèi)生組織總干事譚德塞在瑞士日內(nèi)瓦宣布，將新型冠狀病毒感染的肺炎命名為“COVID-19”。
The novel coronavirus disease has been named COVID-19 by the director general of the World Health Organization.
在世衛(wèi)組織總部舉行的新聞發(fā)布會上，譚德塞宣布，“我們現(xiàn)在將這一疾病命名為‘COVID-19’”，它是2019年暴發(fā)的新型冠狀病毒所引發(fā)疾病的簡稱。
據(jù)新華網(wǎng)報道，譚德塞解釋說：“在世衛(wèi)組織、世界動物衛(wèi)生組織以及聯(lián)合國糧農(nóng)組織的共同指導原則下，我們必須找到一個不涉及地理位置、動物、個人或人群，同時方便發(fā)音且與疾病有關(guān)的名稱。”譚德塞強調(diào)，為該疾病命名很重要，因為可以避免使用其他不準確或是污名化的名稱，同時也為未來可能出現(xiàn)的其他冠狀病毒疫情提供一個標準格式。
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the name was decided that "did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease". He added: "Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatizing. It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks."
譚德塞表示，COVID-19中，CO代表冠狀（corona），VI代表病毒（virus），D代表疾?。╠isease）。2019代表發(fā)現(xiàn)此病毒的年份。
此前，世衛(wèi)組織暫稱該病毒為2019-nCoV”（2019新型冠狀病毒）。在上周六，國務院應對新型冠狀病毒感染的肺炎疫情聯(lián)防聯(lián)控機制舉行新聞發(fā)布會，國家衛(wèi)生健康委新聞發(fā)言人、宣傳司司長宋樹立在會上通報，國務院應對新型冠狀病毒肺炎疫情聯(lián)防聯(lián)控機制成員現(xiàn)決定，將新型冠狀病毒感染的肺炎暫命名為“新型冠狀病毒肺炎”，英文名為“Novel coronavirus pneumonia”，簡稱“新冠肺炎”，英文簡稱NCP。
Before the Tuesday announcement, the virus has been referred to as 2019-nCoV. At a news conference last Saturday, China's National Health Commission gave the virus a temporary name, the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia, or NCP.
本周二至周三，世衛(wèi)組織在日內(nèi)瓦舉行全球研究與創(chuàng)新論壇。世衛(wèi)組織已經(jīng)派遣專家組，與中國專家一同應對新型冠狀病毒肺炎疫情。
The WHO is holding a global research and innovation forum on the virus in Geneva on Tuesday and Wednesday. It has sent an expert team to China to collaborate with Chinese experts to tackle the outbreak of COVID-19.
