U.S President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that his administration is halting the nation's funding to the World Health Organization (WHO).
特朗普當(dāng)天傍晚在白宮記者會上宣布這一決定。他說，美國每年向世衛(wèi)組織繳納超過4億美元會費，作為世衛(wèi)組織的主要贊助方，美國有責(zé)任對世衛(wèi)組織在疫情中的行為問責(zé)。
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump also said a review is being conducted to assess the WHO's role in addressing the spread of the coronavirus. According to Trump, the WHO prevented transparency over the outbreak and the United States - the UN body's biggest funder which provided $400 million last year - will now "discuss what to do with all that money that goes to the WHO."

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday night called the WHO "absolutely critical to the world’s efforts" to fight the coronavirus and said it "must be supported."

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said his message for the world at this moment is unity and solidarity, instead of politicizing the virus. "Please quarantine politicizing COVID. If we want to win, we shouldn't waste time pointing fingers. Unity is the only option to defeat this virus."

Trump’s decision to withdraw funding from the WHO follows a pattern of skepticism of world organizations that began well before the coronavirus pandemic. Trump has questioned US funding to the United Nations, withdrawn from global climate agreements and lambasted the World Trade Organization -- claiming all were ripping off the United States.

The decision drew immediate condemnation. American Medical Association President Dr. Patrice Harris called it “a dangerous step in the wrong direction that will not make defeating COVID-19 easier” and urged Trump to reconsider.
