Ahead of his Saturday night rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. President Donald Trump bragged that he had about 1 million RSVPs. But when the arena didn't even reach its 19,000-person capacity,

The Tulsa Fire Department tallied the crowd at about 6,200 people.

Trump initially was scheduled to hold the rally last Friday, which would have fallen on Juneteenth and in Tulsa — the site of one of the worst incidents of racial violence in US history — was met with widespread criticism amid nationwide protests about police brutality and racial inequality. The campaign eventually moved it one day later.

Prior to the rally, people on social media platforms encouraged people to register to attend Trump's event — and not attend.

CNN had reported that a TikTok video posted by Mary Jo Laupp, who uses the hashtag #TikTokGrandma, was helping lead the charge. The video now has more than 700,000 likes.

"All of those of us that want to see this 19,000 seat auditorium barely filled or completely empty go reserve tickets now and leave him standing alone there on the stage," she said in the video.

Inspired users began posting videos showing they registered for the event — similar posts on Instagram and Twitter clocked up thousands of likes.

One video, with more than 300,000 views, called on fans of South Korean pop music in particular to join the trolling campaign. Fans of the music, which is known as K-pop, are a force on social media — they posted over six billion tweets last year alone.

In the past month alone, K-pop fans have used their vast social media networks to effect change. Earlier this month K-pop fans rallied around the Black Lives Matter movement, drowning out "White Lives Matter" and other anti-black hashtags.

After the Dallas Police Department asked people on Twitter to submit video of "illegal activity from the protests" to its IWatch Dallas app, K-pop fans flooded the app with fancams — or clips of K-pop idols — prompting the app to crash.

Trump's re-election team has rejected claims that a social media campaign by TikTok users and K-Pop fans was behind the lower-than-expected turnout for Saturday night's Oklahoma rally. The team's campaign director said in a statement that "phony ticket requests never factor into our thinking" as entry to rallies is on a first-come first-served basis.

It is not clear if K-Pop fans have registered for the Trump Tulsa rally in big numbers.
