The veteran, Liu Tingzhu, is a retiree living in Beijing and was a Chinese People's Volunteers soldier who took part in the war 70 years ago. Liu accidentally lost the medal while visiting the Summer Palace last Saturday. The story about Liu's loss drew widespread attention and millions of reposts on Sina Weibo after his granddaughter posted a message on the platform seeking help.

“雖然老人是黑龍江戶籍，獎(jiǎng)?wù)乱彩呛邶埥l(fā)放的，但是既然來(lái)了北京，就是我們的服務(wù)對(duì)象。國(guó)家在發(fā)放獎(jiǎng)?wù)碌臅r(shí)候也考慮得非常周到，都有幾枚富余的獎(jiǎng)?wù)?，我們就拿出一枚送給老人。”北京市退役軍人事務(wù)局思想政治和權(quán)益維護(hù)處副處長(zhǎng)金剛說(shuō)，“給老爺子送來(lái)新獎(jiǎng)?wù)?，就是想讓老人放心，如果公園方找到了丟失的獎(jiǎng)?wù)?，再將?jiǎng)?wù)逻€回即可。”

Jin Gang, an official of the bureau, said though Heilongjiang province, where Liu is from, should have handled the issue — as the medal was granted by the province — the bureau in Beijing wanted to help the veteran since he now lives in the capital. "The country is very considerate when granting the medals, and as there are a few extra ones that were made, we gave one of them to Liu." Jin explained. "If the missing medal is found, the replacement should be returned."
