U.S President Donald Trump will be the first sitting president since Andrew Johnson in 1869, who was the first US president to be impeached by the House, to skip his successor's inauguration.

Trump plans to make the unprecedented move to depart the White House next Wednesday morning, just before President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, ABC News has learned.

Trump has requested a large sendoff to be planned for the morning of Jan. 20, sources said, after he choppers via Marine One to Joint Base Andrews, where he is expected to give remarks to supporters and departing members of his administration. Sources add that Trump has requested his departure ceremony to have a "military-like feel," although details are not finalized.

According to AP, officials are considering an elaborate military-style send-off event reminiscent of the receptions he's received during state visits abroad, complete with a red carpet, color guard, military band and even a 21-gun salute, according to a person familiar with the planning who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.

It's unclear if he wants to speak about his legacy. It's also unclear how TV networks would handle such a speech, given his past deceptions and incitements.

Trump is preparing to issue around 100 pardons and commutations on his final full day in office Tuesday, according to three people familiar with the matter, a major batch of clemency actions that includes white collar criminals, high-profile rappers and others but — as of now — is not expected to include Trump himself.

Biden will be sworn in by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. on the Capitol’s West Front sometime before noon. The new president is then expected to give his inaugural address and conduct a review of military troops, as is tradition.

But instead of a traditional parade before cheering spectators along Pennsylvania Avenue as the new president, vice president and their families make their way to the White House over a mile away, there will be an official escort with representatives from every branch of the military for one city block.

For remote viewers, the inaugural committee has planned what it is calling a virtual parade across the country featuring music, poets and dancers “paying homage to America’s heroes on the front lines of the pandemic.”

Trump announced last Friday that he would not attend Biden’s inauguration. Biden called that decision “one of the few things he and I have ever agreed on.”

An unprecedented level of security is being marshaled for the 59th swearing-in ceremony as law enforcement is on high alert for further possible attacks and unrest.

Thousands of National Guard troops will be in place around the 7-foot non-scalable fence surrounding the U.S Capitol.
