A BBC journalist used deceit to win a sensational 1995 interview with Princess Diana in which she disclosed intimate details of her failed marriage to Prince Charles and the broadcaster covered up the deception, an inquiry found on Thursday.

The BBC fell short of "high standards of integrity and transparency" over Martin Bashir's 1995 interview with Princess Diana, an inquiry has found. Bashir acted in a "deceitful" way and faked documents to obtain the interview, the inquiry said. And the BBC's own internal probe in 1996 into what happened was "woefully ineffective", it added.

The BBC and Bashir have both apologised, and the BBC has written to Princes William and Harry. BBC has also written apologies to Prince Charles and Diana's brother Charles Spencer. It is also returning all awards the interview received.

Bashir said mocking up the documents "was a stupid thing to do" and he regretted it, but said they had had no bearing on Diana's decision to be interviewed.

During the "Panorama" interview, watched by more than 20 million viewers in Britain, Diana shocked the nation by admitting to an affair and sharing details of her marriage to the heir to the throne, Prince Charles. It was the first time Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997, had commented publicly about her doomed marriage.

Her remark that "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded" - a reference to Charles rekindling his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, now his second wife - was particularly damaging.

The interview propelled Bashir into the limelight and he went on to secure high-profile interviews with other celebrities, notably the late U.S. singer Michael Jackson.

Last week, the BBC announced that he was leaving his current job as the publicly funded broadcaster's religious affairs editor because of ill health.

Prince William and his brother Prince Harry on Thursday issued strongly worded statements criticizing the BBC and British media for unethical practices.

In his statement, William, 38, said the BBC’s failures contributed to the deterioration of his parents’ marriage and worsened Diana’s feelings of paranoia.

“The interview was a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse and has since hurt countless others,” he said. “It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her.”

William alleged that “the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said.” He went on to say that Diana “would have known that she had been deceived” had the BBC properly investigated the concerns first raised in 1995.

Harry, meanwhile, said the issue was bigger than just the BBC - and that “the ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.”

The two brothers’ relationship has been strained since Harry stepped down from royal duties and moved to the U.S. with his family last year. But both share an almost lifelong difficult relationship with the media, and their statements on Thursday were coordinated for release at the same time.
