The House select committee investigating the Jan 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol voted to subpoena former President Donald Trump for documents and testimony during a public hearing Thursday.
The panel showed clips of Trump at his rally near the White House. He then tells supporters he will march with them to the Capitol. That never happened.
"We must seek the testimony under oath of Jan 6's central player," Committee Vice-Chair Liz Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, said. "We are obligated to seek answers directly from the man who set this all-in motion, and every American is entitled in those answers..." she said.
Trump blasted the unanimous vote from the panel to subpoena him for documents and testimony. "Why didn't the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago?" he wrote on his Truth Social social media platform.
On Jan. 6, 2021, thousands of individuals -- mostly Trump's supporters -- stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and disrupted a joint session of Congress to affirm the 2020 presidential election results.

Approximately 140 police officers were assaulted. Authorities have linked at least five deaths to the mayhem.
It was the worst attack on the U.S. Congress in more than 200 years and led to Trump's second impeachment by the House of Representatives shortly before his term officially ended.
