US President Donald Trump traveled to Maine on June 5 to tour a facility that makes medical swabs used for coronavirus testing, but the swabs manufactured in the background during his visit will ultimately be thrown in the trash, the company said.    

Puritan Medical Products said it will have to discard the swabs, a company spokeswoman told USA TODAY in response to questions about the visit.

During his tour of Puritan Medical Products in Guilford, Maine, Trump touted the swabs, saying it was proof positive that American could handle its own medical supply needs.

“Made in the USA. I’ve been saying it for a long time,” Trump said during the visit in which he toured the factory. He did not wear a face mask, in-keeping with his usual custom.

不過，就在特朗普參觀結(jié)束后，工廠方面卻表示，當(dāng)天工廠投入生產(chǎn)的機(jī)器非常有限，只有特朗普參觀期間才運(yùn)作，而當(dāng)天生產(chǎn)的產(chǎn)品都將被丟棄。

“The running of the factory machines is very limited today and will only occur when the president is touring the facility floor,” Company marketing manager Virginia Templet told USA Today. “Swabs produced during that time will be discarded.”

美媒稱目前尚不清楚廠家這么做的原因，以及丟棄的拭子數(shù)量。但據(jù)緬因州以及美國其他州的公共衛(wèi)生官員表示，由于拭子短缺，令他們無法進(jìn)行大批量的新冠病毒檢測。

據(jù)當(dāng)?shù)孛襟w報(bào)道，上個(gè)月，緬因州仍有近1/3的養(yǎng)老院報(bào)告稱他們沒有咽拭子來采集檢測樣本。

It is not clear why the swabs will be scrapped, or how many. The company described its manufacturing plans for Friday as "limited" – but the disruption comes as public health officials in Maine and other states have complained that a shortage of swabs has hampered their ability to massively scale up coronavirus testing.

Nearly a third of Maine nursing homes reported last month they had no nasal swabs to collect specimens, the Portland Press Herald reported.
