US President Trump on July 7 launched an all-out effort to push states to reopen schools this fall, arguing that some may keep schools closed not because of the coronavirus pandemic but for political reasons against the will of families.

The President also claimed that the US is "not closing" and will "never close," even as the most recent coronavirus data from Johns Hopkins University show that at least 32 states are reporting higher rates of new cases this week compared to last week.

Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced they have jointly filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over new rules barring international students from living in the U.S. while taking online courses. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief to bar the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement from enforcing such regulations on international students.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested on Wednesday that rather than Harvard and MIT suing the Trump administration over the rule, students unable to go to class in person should sue the universities.

“Perhaps the better lawsuit would be coming from students who have to pay full tuition with no access to in-person classes to attend,” McEnany told a White House news conference.
