How many followers does the U.S. president's official Twitter account have?
Right now it's over 33.2 million, but that number will drop to zero after President-elect Joe Biden takes over the official @POTUS account on Inauguration Day.
Twitter has confirmed that the institutional White House Twitter accounts will not "automatically retain their existing followers."

When President Trump was inaugurated in January 2017, the official handles were taken over by the Trump White House with their followers intact, at the encouragement of the outgoing Obama administration.
This time, however, Twitter will not be transferring the followers when those handles shift to the new Biden administration. (@POTUS has more than 33 million followers; @WhiteHouse has more than 26 million.)
Instead, Twitter said that it would notify users who follow the Trump administration’s official accounts that those accounts will be archived, and that they can follow the Biden administration’s new iterations of those handles if they choose.
"Twitter's reluctance to transfer millions of followers from the Trump Administration to the Biden Administration unnecessarily politicizes what otherwise should be a routine transfer of communication from one administration to the next," Biden-Harris transition spokesperson Cameron French told CNN in a statement on Wednesday.
In the statement provided to The New York Post by a Twitter spokesman, the company does not clarify why they opted to reset the incoming administration’s followers, only stating that, “As we did in 2017, Twitter is actively working with the US government to support the transition of Twitter accounts across administrations, so that the incoming Biden administration will have access to institutional White House Twitter accounts.”
