Two giant monsters battling each other in the city streets may be just the escapism audiences need right now. Godzilla vs. Kong, released on March 26, presents the two monsters facing off once more on the silver screen after nearly 60 years.

Godzilla vs. Kong is the fourth and latest film in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse that started with Godzilla in 2014 and was followed up by Kong: Skull Island in 2017 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. South China Morning Post called it the “highlight” of the franchise as it ventures more into science fiction, including a trip to the center of the Earth.

Many critics agree that the title delivers on its promise of monster action. From inventive daylight fighting to an exciting battle on Hong Kong’s coast, the monster movie gives all the explosive action you’d expect.

“The visual effects are stunning, feeling like exactly the first pre-summer blockbuster popcorn movie we all need right now. There is a realism and yet also a necessary fantastical distance for certain of the more [unusual] concepts, and it all meshes beautifully together,” wrote Mark Hughes on Forbes.

Even with the impressive scenes, some critics say that the film lacks substance despite reconnecting with the spirit of the original Japanese films.

“There’s just no real soul to any of these monsters,” Luke Goodsell wrote on ABC Arts. He also said that most of the supporting human characters were “dull”.
