Hailed as heroes in harm’s way, they are the doctors, nurses, emergency rescuers and other medical professionals who have come to Wuhan since the outbreak of COVID-19.

As of Feb 25, more than 41,000 medical workers had arrived in the province to lend a hand in Wuhan and 16 other cities and counties, according to the National Health Commission.

During a meeting on Feb 23, President Xi Jinping called for more protection for the medical workers, in order to advance the work on coordinating the prevention and control of COVID-19 and economic and social development.

Earlier on Feb 19, President Xi said that support to medical workers must be ensured in all aspects so they can remain a strong fighting force and stay in a state of high morale, energy and health.

“Medical workers are the backbone force in fighting the epidemic, and it must be ensured that they get full support,” he noted.

China has rolled out more measures to protect medical workers fighting the epidemic since Feb 14, reported China Daily. “The measures are meant to reduce hospital-related infections, resolve practical difficulties and boost the safety net for them,” said the newspaper.

“Epidemic control work is at a critical stage, and protecting and caring for medical staff plays a significant role in winning the battle against the virus,” Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, said on Feb 14.

The government will do whatever it takes to supply sufficient protective gear and equipment to prevent virus transmission in hospitals, and all medical staff on the front line will be offered a series of subsidies, allowances and insurance policies to protect their legal rights.

Front-line medical workers in Hubei, including those with medical assistance teams from other parts of the country, will have their salaries tripled during the epidemic control fight, and subsidies for them will be further boosted, according to a document released on Feb 23.

In addition, family members of medical workers who have difficulties in their daily lives will also receive more support with their daily living situations.

For those front-line fighters, their biggest hope is the same as everyone else in China.

“I asked my medical staff members what they want the most: They all hope the epidemic can end as soon as possible,” Yu Ting, a doctor for critical patients at Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, told China Daily.

Zhao Peiyu, leader of China-Japan Friendship Hospital’s nursing care team to Hubei, hopes that one day she will come back to the city where she now is fighting against the novel coronavirus – as a traveler, not an emergency medical worker. “I wish to taste the city’s famous dish – hot noodles with sesame paste – standing on the street with cherry blossoms,” she said.
