Few students would relate studying law, or China’s National Judicial Examination for that matter, with interest or enjoyment. But Luo Xiang, 43, a criminal law professor at China University of Political Science and Law, is changing this perspective.
Luo has taken the internet by storm with more than 6.3 million followers on the video-sharing website Bilibili after only creating an account in early March. Among the 29 videos he has uploaded, his first video has been viewed over 8.4 million times.
“It is beyond my expectations that so many students became interested in my class. Through the platform, I hope I can reach more students in teaching knowledge related to criminal law and help them better understand what the rule of law really is,” Luo said in the video.
The secret to his popularity could be explained by his creative storytelling and deadpan humor.
Wearing a pair of glasses and a suit, Luo often starts his class with a story or a case to explain legal terms. Behind the “funny” cases, his class is always inspirational, stirring discussion about law and ethics, according to China Daily.
He frequently gives examples by assuming that Zhang San, part of a regular cast of fictional characters in his courses, committed crimes in various cases, such as poisoning people, robbing people and borrowing money from loan sharks.
However, Luo remains serious about the study of law. It “should be serious, not entertaining”, Luo posted on his Sina Weibo account.
“Although the jokes may be what reel viewers in, Luo’s lasting appeal lies in the reverence with which he treats legal matters, as well as ethics and public welfare,” The Six Tone noted.
