In October 2019, when Xu Jiamiao, 17, a student at Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School, Shaan’xi province, learned about the Xi’an Global Key & Core Technology Conference, she was shocked by advanced achievements that Chinese scientists had made.
“Every nerve in my body seemed to pulse,” she said. “I am so proud of my motherland. It occurred to me that better promoting core tech can help cultivate our interest in science and strengthen confidence in our nation. So I decided to do something,” said Xu.
After that, Xu and six other students spent about nine months drafting a proposal on how to implement patriotic education in a new era. A local member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) will bring it to the upcoming session, which will open on March 4 in Beijing.
To better put their ideas into practice, Xu and her friends first searched online for related data. They then put together a questionnaire containing dozens of questions and surveyed hundreds of people. After analyzing the collected data, they proposed a series of practical ways to promote patriotic education: inviting experts to tour around the country and lecture on the core tech, opening up museums and laboratories, building landmarks such as sculptures, and posting videos online and putting up posters in subways.
Xu’s proposal is part of their school’s efforts to help students understand the country’s political system and gain a sense of social responsibility. In 2015, Xi’an Gaoxin No 1 High School set up its first model political consultative conference club. Ever since then, the school has been giving regular courses to interested students. Working as members of different teams, students learn how to conduct research, analyze data and present their proposals in an efficient manner.
In the past six years, the school’s students have had six proposals brought to the annual session of the CPPCC National Committee. Public health and current affairs are among students’ top interest.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, Liu Yicong, another student from the school, proposed to establish a national memorial day for the pandemic and improve the country’s pandemic prevention capabilities. She also suggested cultivating better hygiene habits through education.
It’s not easy to produce quality proposals while balancing school. Lu Haoying, 18, said that the key is to stay focused on one thing at a time and work together with your team.
